Jan Juc, Torquay and Bells Beach sit together at the start of the Great Ocean Road, about 95 kilometres south-west of Melbourne. Torquay is the service town — shops, the surf brands, most of the places to eat and stay. Jan Juc is the next beach around Rocky Point, quieter and more exposed. Bells Beach, a few minutes further on, is the break that made this coast famous.
This stretch is Wadawurrung (Wathaurong) Country. The towns grew from a seaside camping ground and farmland into the centre of Australian surfing; the Rip Curl Pro has run at Bells every Easter since 1961. The history page covers how that happened.
